How to Prolong Battery Life on a Portable DVD Player

Many portable DVD players come with rechargeable batteries. Battery life is one of the most important features in choosing a portable dvd players. New portable dvd players would have longer life than the used one. However as the time goes by, soon or later the ability of the battery will decrease and when it wear out, it could cost hundreds of dollars to replace. Fortunately, these batteries' lives can be prolonged with the proper care and treatment. I quote the tips from eHow.com.
  1. Allow a new battery on a portable DVD players completely charge before using it. A portable DVD player's battery is usually a rechargeable lithium model, and as such it will develop a memory that greatly depends on how much it is filled to capacity the first time it is charged. Filling the battery to full capacity before using the portable DVD player will significantly prolong its life, while the battery will only last half as long as it would otherwise if you were to charge it to 50 percent of its full capacity.
  2. Drain the portable DVD players battery completely before charging it up again. This also relates to the idea of a battery's memory, because if a battery is charged before it has been completely drained of power, it will have a slightly shorter life than it did when you first charged it. Subsequent charges and not allowing the battery to drain will further shorten its life, until the battery cannot hold a charge that is useful to the portable DVD player.
  3. Avoid charging the portable DVD player's battery to any point less than full power. This is also related to a rechargeable battery's memory, as charging a battery to less than its full power will cause the battery to develop a shorter charge. Recharging the battery fully allows it to keep its original memory of how much of a charge to hold, and it prolongs the battery's life.
  4. Keep the battery safe from power surges. A power surge can overload a portable DVD player's battery or severely reduce its memory capacity, among other harmful results. Invest in a surge protector for your portable DVD player, preferably one that lets you plug in other devices while charging it, and use it for other electronic items you want to protect from a power surge.
  5. Use another video screen instead of the portable screen with which your portable DVD player is equipped. The screen of a portable DVD player is a huge drain on the battery's life, so connect your portable DVD player to another television or monitor while using it in order to prolong the battery's life, not to mention your enjoyment of the movie.
Portable DVD batteries will inevitably go bad, regardless of what steps you take to prolong their life. In general, their capacity will start to decrease after a year of use, and it should probably be replaced after 2 or 3 years of usage.

Portable DVD Players Buying Guide

Portable DVD players have become extremely popular for their ability to entertain us on the go, and take our movies with us, be it in the car to keep our children entertained or just to help us pass the time at the airport while awaiting a flight. Portable DVD Players today are available in prices ranging from forty to fifty dollars to over a thousand dollars, it all depends on what features or options you need and what qualities you prefer in your device. They come in varying shapes and sizes as well, and some can be purchased in kits for specific car mounting, again it all depends on the individual needs of the buyer what they'll purchase in the end. There are a few things to consider though when purchasing a Portable DVD Player.

Battery Life. A portable DVD player isn't portable if you can't take it away from the AC power supply. The thing to think about here is the length of the battery life. While some players offer longer battery life than others, the average time is about 4 hours, which is usually enough for two average movies, considering most movies these days run an hour and half or a little longer each. One thing to note is that while some manufacturers might claim one battery life the real-world performance might greatly differ, so it's very wise to shop around and see what others say about the rated battery life of a product.

Portability is another important factor when choosing a Portable DVD Player, you might wonder how I can even suggest this as a factor in your purchase, but some are more portable than others. It all depends what you will be using your DVD player for as to the type you'll need. More rugged and sturdy players will weigh more than others, you'll want to purchase one that is more durable if you plan on taking it on road trips or even camping. Also a longer battery life usually means a larger battery and therefore more weight added to the product.

Screen Size is something of a personal preference some people don't mind a small screen, but others might and those with vision problems might require a larger screen as well. Here again the larger the screen the heavier it's going to weigh, and of course will cost more as well.

Speakers are an important factor as well, while most portable DVD players will offer built in speakers, some are better than others, most come with one speaker, higher end models do offer stereo sound, or two speakers that are built in. Some even include a feature called virtual surround sound where it enhances the sound quality coming from the speakers in a pseudo surround sound effect through hardware audio signal processing. If you wish for a better audio experience then you'll opt for a more higher end player that includes two speakers and a feature like surround sound built in.There are several other options to look at as well regarding portable DVD players, but the ones that you require or need are of a personal preference.

Audio and Video Outputs are available on some types of portable DVD players, this allows you to connect the player to a regular TV and use it as you would a stand alone Home DVD player. Quite feasibly you could just own a Portable DVD player and then have no need for the stand alone variety if the player you purchase has the optional needed outputs.Removable Batteries are something that you might wish to consider when purchasing a Portable DVD player, while most have the ability to swap batteries, not all do, if you require this option make sure you first check and see if it has the ability to do this. Not every portable DVD player can play all formats of video and audio, if you have your own movies on home recorded DVDs or even home recorded CDs they might not play on all players, if you require this function make sure you check the specs first. Some players also have the ability to play Mp3s, Jpegs and Divx formats as well, but not all will be able to do this. There are numerous types of audio and video formats out there today, and that includes still pictures as well, so if you have specific needs for certain types of formats make sure you read the specifications of the device closely to see if it meets your needs before purchasing. Accessories can be an important factor as well when purchasing a Portable DVD Player, most all players will come with an external power supply to plug into the wall, and some even come with a car power adapter as well, but not all will have this come standard. Some players will also come with a car mount kit, the kit allows you to mount the player on the back of the front seat so it can be easily watched by the passengers sitting in the back, something that is great if you have children. Of course with more accessories comes a higher price tag as well.

Dual Headphone Jacks: All Portable DVD players come with one headphone jack, but some include two so you can share the audio with someone else, if you wish to share the audio then you'll need to make sure it includes two sets of headphone jacks.

Anti-Skip Feature: If you're planning on traveling a lot with a Portable Player, especially in the car you should make sure you find one with an anti-skip function built in, this might seem like something that should come standard on a portable device but this isn't always the case. There are also varying levels of anti-skip technology as well, some products will have it labeled right on the package how far ahead the device reads. The technology works be reading ahead and buffering it in the devices memory, some products mights say 30 seconds, while others will say 120 seconds, obviously the longer read ahead time offers better anti-skip protections.

Remote control: If the player is in your lap on a plane, you obviously won't need this, but with the player plugged into a large TV across the room the remote control is a necessity.

Viewing angle: Not everyone can sit right in front of the player and viewing quality on flat screens can drop off quickly the further you go from this central point, so a wide viewable angle is a must - for viewing by two people in the back of a car, for instance. The wider the viewing angle the better. A viewing angle of up to 160 degrees can be achieved with a high-quality TFT (thin film transistor) flat screen common on today's portable devices.

When purchasing a Portable DVD Player you need to know what you're going to be using it for, and what features you want or need to have included with it. The type you purchase will greatly depend on your own specific needs and uses for it. Shop around and do a bit of research, talk to other people who own these products and see how they perform. Don't always believe what the manufacturers have written on their products boxes, like battery life for example, most will list the higher end, but not the average life expectancy of the battery, or some will list ranges like 4-6 hours, well there's a big difference between 4 and 6 when it comes to watching one movie or two. When you finally find the product you intend on buying make sure you see what others are saying about to make sure it lives up to the manufacturers claims.

Best Portable DVD Players : Toshiba SD-P71S

Image hosted by servimg.com

This is another best portable DVD players, I found in the internet. The Toshiba SD-P71S. Review from CNET quoted as follows:-

One of the issues we've had with portable DVD players in the past is their size. In exchange for a large screen, most players are also accompanied by an enormous housing. With the Toshiba SD-P71S however, this is not the case. In fact, its compact size is the first thing we noticed about the SD-P71S--unlike some bulky competitors, the 1.6-pound Toshiba should fit easily in backpacks and carry-on luggage. The player is covered in a rubber-like coating that feels soft to the touch and helps users in gripping the unit. We were also glad to see that its battery is much less intrusive than those found on many other players.

The P71S has a 7-inch screen that is mounted right above the player's speakers. Unfortunately the screen does not swivel, so it may be awkward trying to watch a movie while holding the player in your hands. Also, we should note that there are no included accessories to enable car-seat mounting (some competing models include straps and cloth casing for attaching to the back of a car seat for rear passenger viewing).

The SD-P71S sports all of the function buttons you'd need to control every aspect of a DVD, including fast-forward and rewind functionality. On the right side of the player, you'll find the unit's various interfaces: dual headphone jacks; an AV input, for using the screen as a monitor; AV output, for playing DVDs on an outboard TV; and a bit-stream/PCM jack, to enable surround sound when connected to a compatible home theater system. Here you'll find the volume control wheel as well. The player comes bundled with a composite AV breakout cable (for the aforementioned connections), an AC power adapter, and a car charger.

The included remote control has all of the buttons found on the P71S itself, including shortcuts to other functions that you would normally have to navigate to via the buttons on the actual player. The remote is well laid out and is slim enough to bring with you anywhere you would take the player. And unlike the "credit card" style remotes found on most portables, this one has actual buttons, too.

While there's no USB port or flash card reader, the Toshiba can play MP3 and WMA audio files and display JPEG photos from a CD-R. While we enjoyed having the ability to play these file types, the interface to do so isn't the most easy-to-use experience.

On the performance front, the SD-P71S delivered. Picture quality was good with the DVDs and DVD-Rs we played. And while the sound quality from the stereo speakers below the screen was perfectly adequate, you'll probably find yourself using the headphones jacks. Toshiba claims up to 3 hours of playback with the battery on the P71S, but we were glad to see that a 2.5-hour charge netted almost 4 hours of total movie playback time.

Summing up, the Toshiba SD-P71S is a solid portable DVD player with better-than-average picture quality and decent battery life.

Best Portable DVD Players : Sony DVP-FX820

I've been searching in the internet and read some reviews about this Sony portable DVD players with model number DVP-Fx820. Some sites categorized this model as its 'top portable DVD players' or 'best portable DVD players'. Available in 5 colors choices i.e. black, blue, red, pink, white.

With a 6hr battery life, an 8" high-resolution swivel screen that provides a clear and crisp picture from any angle, 2 headphone jacks for sharing, and a car adapter that ensures your movies outlast even the longest road trip. And when you want more than movies, the FX820 plays your CDs or MP3s, and lets you view your personal photo albums. Control buttons are located on the screen bezel for ease of use. Skipping or fast forwarding a scene is so easy to do, either with the control buttons or with the dual-sensor remote control. This portable DVD player is so lightweight and compact that you can carry it anywhere you go. Though it is designed for adults, its durability is certainly built for kids.

However this portable DVD player has some bad points. It's 2.7-pound weight; no USB port or flash card reader; no support for DivX or other digital video files.
